Day 68: Greenhouse
By the time lunch ended, the gloomy weather had become a raging storm. Soushi held his coat tightly as they were separated once again, and followed his guide to the outdoor greenhouse. Luckily, the temperature changed and balanced out nicely once they were inside and he shook himself free of the coat.
The greenery was a welcome change, but it was hard to appreciate it when every passing moment only filled him with more worry. While he had obtained a great deal more information today than in his first day in the institution, he was still no closer to finding Ririchiyo or a means of escape. There was a dull ache in his chest that had nothing to do with any physical ailment and everything to do with her absence.
An audible sigh escaped his lips as he picked up a small trowel and gloves and took to the nearby plants, attempting to distract himself and failing miserably.

As the nurse had mentioned, this patient was pretty young, even though his height made it harder to tell. The boy's facial features were still a pretty big giveaway that he was probably in his early teens at the most.
And apparently he'd gotten hurt somehow. When the kid apologized, Guy was quick to shake his head. "It's fine. Would you mind telling me what really happened?" Since both of them were very much aware that falling down the stairs wouldn't lead to injuries like that in the first place. It was hard to believe that the nurses actually bought it, but the amount of brainwashing they were under had to be pretty severe.
Guy still planned to find some of that St. John's wort, but he figured he could make sure this younger patient was all right first.

"I was just lucky enough to run into monsters a couple nights in a row," he answered dismissively. It left out all of the important details, but it technically wasn't a lie, and the populace of these walls were probably so used to dealing with this sort of thing that the stranger was likely to take it at face value.
At least, Kyousuke hoped so. Maybe it would be best to just change the subject. "Do you know anything about the cure that's being going around?" he asked in a low voice, trying to prevent any eavesdropping nurses from overhearing. "I've heard the name, but I don't know what it looks like."
no subject
It didn't take long for the conversation to switch to the cure, though Guy wasn't surprised by that. This kid didn't look sick, but it was possible he was asking on someone else's behalf. In that case, Guy was more than happy to help.
"Yeah, I know what it looks like. Actually, I was going to see if I could smuggle one out..." He kept his voice down as he explained. While he knew he shouldn't be acting as a bad influence, he was doing this for the right reasons, and now he had someone who could help him try to pull this off without getting caught. "I can show you where it is, if you need one too."
no subject
"... I don't need one specifically," he explained. "I just thought it was the best thing I could be doing for anyone right now." The only thing, considering what kind of shape he was in, but even that weren't true, getting everyone cured would still be the priority. No matter what his own situation was, he couldn't afford to stand by hope others would take care of things. Nobody could. "But if you need to get one out, I could help you out."
As long as he had some kind of role in all of this, he didn't care how indirect it was. The small things still counted for something, and he had to carry his own weight, especially with so many failures to make up for.

"I'd appreciate the help, yeah," he said after a pause. "I have a friend who's sick and I don't think she's gotten a hold of one of them yet, so I'm hoping..." Guy took a quick look around to make sure no nurses were listening in on them, but the narrow aisles of the greenhouse actually afforded them some privacy.
"Let me show you where they are first," he said, moving past the kid carefully so that he could work his way down the rest of the aisle. He turned his head back toward him as he walked and smiled briefly. "The name's Guy, by the way."

"I'm Tsurugi," he responded, returning Guy's greeting with a nod. He followed the man down the rows, observing some of the plants as he went. He recognized some of the more common ones, but there were many more he didn't know the names or uses of, which wasn't to say there was anything strange, but more that he'd never had much interest in plant life. Maybe he could see if he could look some of these up in the library eventually—it was possible there was something useful here.

For now, though, all he was focused on was finding the St. John's wort, but Guy remembered exactly where it was, as he'd committed it to memory after Rita had shown him. Before long, he reached the planter that held the yellow, star-shaped flowers, and paused, turning to face Tsurugi.
"These are the ones," he said as he gestured toward them. He was pretty surprised that no one else was crowding around this area, but it was for the best, since they didn't want to attract the nurses' attention.

He gave Guy a nod to show that he understood, but for the time being, he examined the leaves of a complete different plant between his fingers, like he was only browsing with half interest. Meanwhile, he tried to get a read on the nurses' positions, which was easy enough—keeping track of his surroundings was practically second nature to him.
"... They don't seem to be paying much attention," he said quietly, so that only Guy could hear.

When Tsurugi spoke up, Guy nodded briefly, edging himself closer to the planter. He knew that trying to take more than one was probably too risky, so he focused on carefully reaching forward and tugging one flower free of the rest of the plant.
He slipped the flower into the pocket of his sweatpants and then turned himself around, crossing his arms over his chest. He needed to be casual about this, so he nodded to Tsurugi. "Is this your first time in the greenhouse, Kendrick?"

He could feel the occasional gaze in their general direction, but the nurses still didn't seem to think anything of their presence in the area, so he felt safe enough approaching the St. John's Wort. It would probably just look idiotic if he tried to make a quick job of it, and he was sore enough that he doubted he could, so instead, he openly knelt in front of the plant and absently brushed a thumb over one of the flowers. There was no rule saying they couldn't look at anything, after all, and it would only look more suspicious if they both seemed to avoid only a single plant.
But then he suddenly cringed, bringing both hands to his chest as though crouching down like this was aggravating his injuries. He pulled himself up slowly, sucking in a breath and exhaling slowly.
"... I guess it's still hard. Maybe we should look at something taller," the boy suggested.
Meanwhile, the flower he'd been looking at had disappeared down the sleeve of his sweatshirt.

As Tsurugi moved toward the plant, Guy tried to position himself so that he was hiding him from view of as many nurses as he could, but he had to make it look natural. He glanced over his shoulder to watch Tsurugi for a moment, and then frowned when he started to have a fit.
Act or not, it was certainly the perfect cover to slip one of those flowers into his clothing. Guy knelt down and grabbed for Tsurugi's shoulder, and the look of his concern on his face wasn't faked.
"Yeah, sorry, I didn't mean for you to push yourself so hard." He moved his hand to extend it to Tsurugi, hoping to help him up. "We can go look at one of the rose bushes instead." With their job done, it honestly didn't matter where they went.
no subject
"It's fine," he muttered. In the end, he did grab onto Guy's wrist to help himself up, but not before giving the hand a strange look, as though he was considering rejecting it. ... He supposed there wasn't a point. If he tried too hard, it would only make things look more serious.
That accomplished, he shoved both hands into his pockets, starting off for another area of the greenhouse. It was difficult to resist examining the flower he'd managed to pick, but he manged to ignore it. He wondered what would have happened if he'd found out about these earlier... It was pointless to think about at this point, but still hard not to.

They made it down the aisle and into another one before Guy felt safe talking again. He glanced to Tsurugi and smiled briefly. "You did good back there. Thanks. I didn't mean for you to have to hurt yourself to pull that off..." But now they each had a flower, which was bound to do some good for someone, if they were fast enough about it.
"Guess I'd better see if I can get back to the bulletin before dinner." Guy didn't know if Leanne would even see his message, but it was worth a shot, right?
no subject
"Yeah. Hopefully you can help your friend soon." It might be a good idea for him to write a note, too, but how to phrase it was the problem. He couldn't exactly alert the staff that he'd managed to get a flower. ... Then again, he had a tough time believing they didn't already know everything. Most of the messages weren't exactly hard to decipher, and if a kid like him could do it, it seemed silly that staff couldn't. Keeping up appearances, maybe...? Who knew. When it really came down to it, Kyousuke had to admit that he understood very little about this place.
Though they weren't quite to their makeshift destination yet, the thought made him pause. "... Do you mind if I ask you something?" he asked, turning to Guy with a frown. "I've heard a lot about this place, but never anything about why." Maybe Guy would know something. ... Maybe he wouldn't. Either way, it couldn't hurt to ask.
no subject
When Guy was asked something out of the blue, he decided to pause and give Tsurugi his attention, since where they were headed didn't matter that much in the first place. They'd put enough distance between them and the plant by now.
"About why?" he echoed. "Why we were brought here, you mean?" It was something they all wondered about, of course, but Guy couldn't say he had a cut and dry answer. "Seeing how there's actually a military force that's backing this place, at least financially, a lot of people think that we're supposed to be soldiers. The experiments they do would also make that pretty likely, but no one knows for sure." It was hard to imagine Tsurugi out on a battlefield, tough or not, but Guy kept that to himself.
no subject
"... So basically, it's possible all this might be considered training?" If so, that was another thing this place had in common with God Eden, which made several things make more sense. It all came down to cornering them physically and mentally, and evaluating how well they preformed under pressure. Just like that "Team Zero" experiment. If he thought about it like that, everything seemed to start falling into place. Soldiers for what became the real question, but since everything was only a possibility, he doubted anyone would be able to tell him. But maybe that didn't matter so much.
"Well, knowing anything more probably wouldn't change anything," he decided with a shrug. "No matter what the reasons, it isn't something that can be justified." In the end, that was all that really mattered.
no subject
"Yeah, there isn't any way that Landel could argue that he's doing this for the greater good, I don't think." Just because they'd been pulled from different worlds didn't meant they didn't have to be treated like people. And even if this world was in trouble, asking them for help rather than demanding it would have made a lot more sense.
But Guy had long ago given up on trying to understand the Head Doctor's motivations. He crossed his arms over his chest and let out a sigh. "But if we got here, that means we can get back. So just keep at it, all right?" He didn't know if Tsurugi necessarily needed a pep talk, but the words had made it out before Guy really realized what he was doing.
no subject
"... Yeah," the boy agreed after a moment. "If we stop here, nothing will ever change."
That was more than enough reason to keep going. There was no point in constantly looking back or letting himself get dragged under. Everyone had a part they could play. If they could all persevere and learn to help each other, there were a lot of things they were capable of. ... It wasn't as simple as kindness. That was just the sort of strength he had to demand from himself.
But it looked like he wouldn't be able to linger on that thought for too long, as the nurses were slowly beginning to round people up. That was fine by him, since for once, there was actually something to show for his time.
